The road is a 100-mile stretch of beautiful and odd sights all rolled into one. Currently, the road’s quality is average to poor in sections. However, the vistas combined with the highly engaging curves and turns conspire to make this a real riding delight.

The road starts about 30 kilometers outside Deva. DEVA is a pleasant city, best known as the home of Romania’s top gymnastics club and training ground for the elite Olympic gymnastics team. The city is worth a stop for a visit to the ruins of Deva fortress built in the 13th century. There is a recently constructed cable car that provides easy access to the hilltop location—the expansive views of the city and the Mures valley below are well worth the time and admission.

From Deva, head westward on E68, and veer left on E673 in the town of Sacamas. From this point, the road squeezes between the Lipova Plateau on the right and the beautiful Poiana Rusca Mountains on the left. The road is particularly scenic between the villages of Dobra and Cosava. On this stretch, the road climbs and twists until it reaches the top of the ridge near Cosava. When you arrive at the massive telecommunication outpost boasting a rather large antenna, the views open to reveal the surrounding mountains. The ride up is filled with sharp turns and quick curves, moving you from side to side.

From Cosava, the ride descends into the town of Faget, known in the area mostly for its airplane coffee bar. The town has converted an old airplane into a coffee shop twenty-some years ago. During communism, the airplane was painted its original, drab gray. Nowadays, due to the benefit of a free market economy, the plane sports the well-known markings of Coca-Cola.

From Faget, the road is mainly flat, characterized by long straights and wide sweepers. The scenery is pleasant, but not dramatic, and offers a relaxing ride into Lugoj.

Lugoj is an old town, with a charm all its own. The city is home to several Romanian musicians and composers. Lugoj is also the birthplace of Bela Lugosi (born 1882 as Bela Ferenc Blasko), the actor who immortalized the original Dracula character in the famous Hollywood film.
