This road connects the cities of Reghin and Cluj-Napoca. Reghin is an industrial town, best known for its successful violin factory. The factory owes its success to the availability of very grainy curly sycamore in the adjacent Gurghiu Valley. The 90 kilometers of DN16 traverse the high Transylvanian Plateau, and offer a well-balanced mix of hairpin turns with impressive elevation changes, S-curves in tight sequence, high-speed sweepers and scenic straight stretches. In 2006, the road is under construction, which means that there are entire sections that have no concrete or asphalt on them, just dirt. So if you plan to ride anything this side of a dual-sport, you have been warned. Aside from that, the road is an adventure. It runs mainly through small villages, providing a glimpse into rural Romanian life. By late 2007, this should be a fun road to explore on just about any bike. Riding into CLUJ-NAPOCA it becomes obvious that this is a large and growing city. New dealerships, superstores, small factories and new construction dot the sides of the road. A city with a long history and an important university center, Cluj has a vibrant personality and energy with its trendy coffee shops, swanky bars and up-to-the-minute Euro fashion on the streets. Cluj is an ethnically diverse city with a large Hungarian population. In the 1970s, Ceausescu added Napoca to the city’s name to signify its Daco-Roman roots. However, most people refer to the city as Cluj.
