This road originates in Gheorgheni, a pleasant but uninspiring town nestled between the Gurghiului and Giurgeului Mountains. The road leads eastward from the town for 55 kilometers into Bicaz. The main attraction of this road constitutes the Bicaz Gorges. In fact, the road is considered one of Romania’s top scenic routes. As it leaves Gheorgheni, the road climbs the Giurgeului Mountains, offering spectacular views of pine forests and panoramic vistas. The road is twisty, with significant elevation changes and enough twists and turns to keep you entertained for quite a while. About 20 kilometers into the trip, you arrive at Lacul Rosu (Red Lake). The lake and the adjoining resort are quite an attraction, as the waters are filled with dead tree stumps jutting out at odd angles. The resort dates back to the 1970 and is popular with hikers and people looking for an outdoor party. You can find lodging and places to eat in the area. As the road descends into the gorges, the view narrows substantially. The Bicaz Gorges were created by the Bicaz River which cut into sheer 300-meter high limestone for over five kilometers. Riding this road feels like being on the back of a twisting snake that makes its way through a narrow gate. The road meanders directly underneath the overhanging rocks and is almost squeezed out in a section called the Neck of Hell (Gatul Iadului). The road is defined by amazing hairpin curves, flowing one into the other, with noticeable elevation changes. The road competes for your attention with the incredible sights of the gorges, not to mention your concentration to control your machine. There are spots all along the way where you can pull over and take in the amazing vertical views and the rolling river. You can also find stalls and booths where local artisans sell their crafts and traditional products. Past the gorges, the road widens and flattens as it approaches Bicaz and the southern tip of Lake Izvorul Muntelui. You have just crossed the Eastern Carpathians into Romanian Moldova. This road is only 55 kilometers long. Yet, the fantastic views, the lush forests, the lake and the magnificent gorges, all conspire to make it one of the most unforgettable rides in Romania. And when you are done riding it, the road will feel a lot longer than the short distance you just covered. |
